![]() The frequencies are so deep, they're barely perceptible to Human hearing. They don't possess a typical mouth but instead communicate with deep, complex sounds they make with flute-like structures in their heads. Farley also suspects that the Arai have the deepest understanding of the Trees.įinally, the Villein, who reside in the jungle-like 'cell' of Maray, are an imposing bunch, with bulky forms and multiple limbs. They tell her about their history: ancient aliens that coexisted and built temples and habitats for the Arai, and more recent arrivals that came to dominate their planet and build the massive mechanical constructions, using Beetles as bait. Caroline Farley eventually discovers that the Polyarchs have been probing telepathically, finally finding a way to 'speak' to the Human mind. While the emergence of Polyarchs is unclear, they are essentially the brain of the species, mosty immobile. Possessing a sort of hive-mind, these Beetles serve as a Polyarch's main method of interacting with their physical world, having little sentience of their own. ![]() In the presence of their Polyarchs, they hatch into Beetles. Seen across the cells, their egg-like Barnacle form lays dormant almost indefinitely. They are an insect-like species with distinct forms. The Arai reside on the 'cell' called Kaptar. For this reason, they have trouble seeing shades of blue. Their affinity for red seems to stem from the ecology of their planet, where little blue light exists. This technology appears to also let them 'lock' other forms of energy, creating impassable barriers. The Mofang are able to create interesting projections with their technology, forming what seems to be solid material from the outside. Their native language is unpronouncable to Humans, but they are excellent mimics and soon learn enough Human languages to communicate well (though their speech is disjointed and they seem to have trouble with our language structure). They possess advanced technology and appear highly intelligent. They are red and quite humanoid in form, though a little more lithe and fragile. The Mofang reside on Hunrath's sister 'cell' of Soria, a seemingly stark world of purple rock, floating islands, and red crystal. Through the appearance of the 'ambassador' seeds and gateways, the Human population on Hunrath quickly learn they have three 'neighbors' in other Tree 'cells'. This allows them to set up the elaborate systems and gateways they use to traverse, harness, (and later, restrict) their environments. In time, the various occupants learn to master these seeds, activating them on demand and controlling the size of the area they transport. The 'ambassador' seeds can be activated continuously. Beneath the trees are interstellar gateways, connecting not just the two paired Trees but two others, as well, paired as they are.Ī third type, the 'collector' seeds occasionally go out and search for individuals on the home planets, finding lost and troubled souls, 'rescuing' them and teleporting them into the cells. In addition, once the Trees reach maturity, they reveal a final passageway. This provides a gradual method for the various species caught in the 'cells' to interact and learn from one another. ![]() One, the 'ambassador' seeds, seem intended to allow transport between the various 'cells'. It also begins sprouting two other types of seeds. But it's also impenetrable and will teleport its inhabitants to the opposite sphere wall if they try to pass through. On the inside, the fledgling Mother Tree goes to work, stabilizing the atmosphere and providing the necessities of life to those within. From the outside, this field seems to be nearly invisible, and inhabitants on the outside are teleported around it without even knowing it's there. When these pairs are ready, they plant themselves within a remote population on two separate planets, instantly swapping a massive sphere area and encapsulating it within a mysterious energy field. As with all of the seeds, 'mother' seeds come in pairs. These seeds possess the ability to bend the fabric of space-time, and the 'mother' seeds are the mightiest of all. They also seem drawn to planets with intelligent inhabitants on the brink of collapse. They seem to be vaguely conscious entities, and for unknown reasons the 'mother' seeds disperse into the galaxy/universe, seeking out planets with living conditions similar to our own. The Cells and the TreesAt some point in the cosmos, though it's never made clear, the Trees and Seeds came into existence.
